The Antifibrotic Role of Relaxin
نویسندگان
چکیده
Relaxin, a polypeptide hormone of the insulin superfamily, is involved in the promotion of extracellular matrix remodeling. Emerging evidence supports a potential therapeutic role of relaxin in fibrotic diseases including liver. Relaxin has been shown to limit collagen production and promote collagen degradation. It not only prevents fibrogenesis, but also reduces established scarring. Together, these findings suggest that the liver is a target organ of relaxin. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to provide an overview of relaxin, its receptor, and their signaling with a focus on areas of potential translational research on fibrosis with emphasis on liver. *Corresponding author: Dr. Geeta Tripathi, Command Hospital, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India E-mail: [email protected] Review Article

متن کاملRelaxin down-regulates renal fibroblast function and promotes matrix remodelling in vitro.
BACKGROUND Renal fibroblasts are important effector cells in tubulointerstitial fibrosis, with experimental antifibrotic strategies focusing on the functional down-regulation of these cells. Several experimental models of fibrosis have provided evidence for the effectiveness of the polypeptide hormone relaxin as a potential antifibrotic agent. This study was conducted to further elucidate the a...
متن کاملRelaxin in cardiovascular and renal disease.
Fibrosis (organ scarring) is a hallmark of many forms of cardiovascular and renal disease, and causes organ dysfunction and structural changes when normal tissue is replaced with scar tissue; the accumulation of scar tissue being a leading cause of death around the world. Despite deep organ scarring potentially existing in many forms (including myocardial and vascular sclerosis, renal interstit...
متن کاملRelaxin abrogates renal interstitial fibrosis by regulating macrophage polarization via inhibition of Toll-like receptor 4 signaling
Renal fibrosis is a common feature of chronic kidney disease (CKD). To inhibit the CKD process, it is important to prevent renal fibrosis, though CKD remains incurable. Renal fibrosis can be inhibited by relaxin in several experimental models, but the mechanism of relaxin for antifibrotic potential is still not clear. And here we have studied the role of relaxin in macrophage polarization and r...
